If you are using Naturtint for the first time or are looking to try a new shade, use the codes to help you choose the most suitable colour. Each Naturtint shade is given a code usually consisting of a number and then a letter. The number represents a scale of how dark or light a colour is, with 1 (e.g. 1N Ebony Black) being the darkest and 10 (e.g. 10N Light Dawn Blonde) being the lightest. The letter afterwards tells you what kind of tones and colour you can expect, where N = Natural, G = Golden, M = Mahogany, C = Copper, R = Red, I – Iridescent and A = Ash.
You can go as dark as you like with Naturtint, but you can only lighten by one or two shades in one colouring. For example, if you are naturally/currently similar to the 5N, you could use the 6N or 7N, or even the 6G or 7C if you were looking to change the tone as well as lighten the hair. As a general rule, most people suit shades one or two darker or lighter than their natural shade, as this generally suits their skin tone.

If you want to use a brighter tone such as a Mahogany (M) or Copper (C) and you have some grey hair – mix them with a similar numbered Natural (N) tone first for a uniform and natural-looking coverage. E.g. Mix 50:50 proportions of 4M with 4N.
The Ash colours are generally not intended for use on their own – use these two shades to tone down hair colour i.e. if too yellow, orange, brassy, golden, reddish.

Sensitivity Test
Whilst Naturtint is free from Ammonia, Resorcinol & Parabens, and therefore less likely to cause irritation, on rare occasions as with any hair colourant, some individuals can suffer sensitivity reactions. It is for this reason that a sensitivity test must be carried out 48 hours before colouring the hair. Simply follow these steps:
1. Cleanse a small area of skin inside the bend of the elbow and behind the ear to remove any barriers.
2. In a plastic or glass container, mix a capful of Naturtint Permanent Hair Colourant and Colour Developer then apply with a cotton swab. Allow to dry and then repeat twice more.
3. Allow to dry and leave untouched for 48 hours. You can use any remaining mixture to carry out the strand text.
4. You may use the colourant if no allergic reactions occur.*

* NOTE: IF ANY BURNING, ITCHING, SWELLING, REDNESS OR IRRITATIONS APPEAR IN OR AROUND THE TEST AREA, DO NOT CONTINUE WITH THE COLOURING PROCESS.

Strand Test
In order to assess the selected tone and development time required to achieve it, simply carry out the following test:
1. Cut a small lock of hair from a discreet area (just enough so you can see the colour) and secure the ends with sticky tape.
2. Add the lock of hair to the mixture and allow to develop.
3. Leave the strand test to develop for 30 minutes and then remove the lock of hair, rinse and dry.
4. Observe the colour of the hair, and hold to your head to compare the new colour. If you are happy with the colour outcome, you know you need to leave your colour on for 30 minutes. If the colour is too dark, you can reduce the development time to 20 minutes, if it isn’t dark enough or you still have some grey showing, this indicates that you need to leave it on for the full 40 minutes when you apply it to your whole head of hair.

In each box of Naturtint, along with the components of the colourant, you will find protective gloves and a comprehensive instruction leaflet, detailing the preparation and application of the colour. Please read and follow these instructions carefully before use.
